Veteran Success Story
"I joined the navy through HMAS Nirimba, in jun 1991 and thought that after several years the Navy was always going to be my career"
~ Employed March 2018
After spending fifteen years as a chief petty officer I thought maybe I should have a look at what’s out in the big bad civilian world, so the next email I saw was a email asking for volunteer to attend the first ever “Working spirit program” for veterans stepping out, I thought why not I have nothing to lose.
I didn’t even have a CV 48 hours before I attended the seminar. I sat in a room filled with many years of experience and great military career, but it wasn’t about that, it was about stepping out.
The WA Veterans Minister gave his speech and then many more had there say about several employment assistance pathways however, I think that I took a little from every one including the great advice from a psychologist stating try and go for many jobs and gain experience from every one. The next step was to actually go and talk to several great companies that were graceful enough to attend and talk about there businesses and life within there companies.
I actually enjoyed talking to one in particular and now employed full time with that company! During the entire seminar there were people that I spoke to and asked for feedback on anything to help me transition to the civilian world comfortably. In particular I now have a great LinkedIn profile and given excellent training from Sean, who was only very helpful to provide excellent feedback at many stages.
I can only say that this program is an excellent step and nothing but fantastic to showcase great people to great companies through excellent coordination of an outstanding lady Karyn hinder From a veteran now employed by a civilian company Thank you all!
