Our client is seeking a Technology Specialist. This role would suit a veteran who has experience working in a highly regulated Defence environment, managing sensitive information, interpreting policy and procedures, assessing risk, working with multiple stakeholders and making sound decisions under pressure.
You don’t necessarily need to have held the job title of “Export Controls Officer” in Defence. Your experience in compliance, security, governance, intelligence, logistics, procurement, project management or Defence operations may provide highly transferable skills.
You will work across the business to:
- Provide advice on Australian and international import and export control requirements.
- Identify, assess and manage risks associated with controlled technology and Defence-related information.
- Help ensure the organisation complies with export control legislation and regulations.
- Provide advice to project teams and business areas where controlled technology or information is involved.
- Assist with business development and project activities that may be affected by export controls.
- Monitor access to controlled technology and ensure appropriate controls are in place.
- Interpret complex legislation, regulations and policies and explain them clearly to others.
- Identify potential compliance risks and recommend practical solutions.
- Work with stakeholders across the organisation to ensure requirements are understood and followed.
- Make timely and informed decisions in a highly regulated environment.
- Help protect ASC from financial, legal, contractual and reputational risk.
Your Defence experience may have already given you many of the skills this role requires.
You may have experience with:
- Working within strict Defence policies, procedures and legislation.
- Handling classified, sensitive or controlled information.
- Security and access requirements.
- Risk assessment and risk management.
- Compliance and governance.
- Interpreting Defence policy and procedures.
- Making decisions where there are significant consequences.
- Working with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- Maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Working under pressure and meeting strict deadlines.
- Briefing senior leaders and providing advice.
- Investigating issues and analysing information.
- Working independently while remaining accountable to the organisation.
- Operating in a highly regulated environment.
This position may be particularly relevant to veterans with backgrounds in:
Security, Intelligence, Governance, Compliance, Logistics, Supply Chain, Procurement, Project Management, Engineering, Operations, Administration,Capability, Policy, Risk Management
Experience working with Defence systems, controlled information, international equipment, technology, procurement or security frameworks would be highly valuable.
Our client is looking for someone who can:
- Understand and apply complex regulations and procedures.
- Analyse information and identify potential risks.
- Balance operational requirements with compliance obligations.
- Explain complex requirements in a way that people across the business can understand.
- Work autonomously and take ownership of tasks.
- Build relationships and influence people across different areas of the organisation.
- Remain calm and effective when working under pressure.
- Meet strict deadlines without compromising accuracy.
- Provide practical, commercially focused advice.
- Look at both the big picture and the finer details when making decisions.
Ideally, you will have around 3 years’ experience managing export/import controls, compliance, risk or similar obligations within Defence or another highly regulated industry.
You should also have an understanding of export controls and ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations).
However, veterans should consider applying if their Defence experience demonstrates strong compliance, security, risk management, policy, governance or controlled-information responsibilities, even if their previous military position did not have the same job title.
A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline is desirable but not mandatory.
You must be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Defence security clearance at Negative Vetting 1 (NV1)
This is an opportunity to take the skills you developed in Defence — discipline, judgement, security awareness, risk management, attention to detail, compliance and operating in complex environments — and apply them to a civilian career within Australia’s Defence industry.
Your military experience has already taught you how to work within rules, understand risk, protect sensitive information and make decisions when the stakes are high.
